ESS (Engineering Science Society) has been supporting fundamental and/or interdisciplinary researches in electronics, information and communication engineering. Subsocieties and technical committees in ESS are in different statuses and environments, and their needs also differs. However, nurturing young researchers and students is a common important issue. I would like to extend supports by ESS for the activities in the subsocieties and technical committees. I also would like to tackle the common important issue with all the members of ESS.

Toru Fujiwara received the B.E., M.E., and Ph.D. degrees in Information and Computer Sciences from Osaka University in 1981, 1983, and 1986, respectively. In 1986, he joined the faculty of Osaka University. Since 1997, he has been a Professor at Osaka University. He is currently with the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology. He is IEICE Fellow. He searved as Vice President of ESS, Editioral Committee Member of IEICE Trans. Fundamentals, Chair of IEICE Technical Committees, Information Theory and Information Security, Associate Editor of IEEE Trans. IT, President of SITA, and so on.
