Since ubiquitous broadband mobile necessitates many picocell base-stations to achieve a wide coverage, we face pressure in reducing deployment cost of base-stations. Wireless backhaul contributes to reduce the cost by releasing wired links connecting base-satiations with Internet. In “MIMO-MESH point development project” of Knowledge Cluster Initiative, Second Phase supported by MEXT, the authors have developed a wireless access point in palm size, PicoMesh LunchBox (LB). LB having wireless backhaul capability can expand WiFi area easily, quickly and flexibly. This paper introduces an interesting application to show LB’s network capabilities. PicoRover, a real avatar vehicle, is a compact remote car that equips a video camera as its eyes and a display as its face. An operator can remotely control PicoRover watching dynamic image seen via the video camera while the operator’s face is dynamically shown on the display. The control signals are also transmitted over Wifi access network organized by LBs. Onsite demonstrations of LB and PicoRover will be made to prove three important capabilities being essential in realizing wireless system of this kind, i.e. broadband, low-delay and hand-over. |
