Experimental Performance Evaluation of Multi-Hop Configuration and Transmission in Wi-SUN FAN Devices

(in English) Wireless Smart Utility Network Field Area Network (Wi-SUN FAN) is one of the Wi-SUN profiles that is expected to be adopted in many smart devices in the advanced smart city infrastructures to provide Machine-to-Machine (M2M) communication in Low power and Lossy Networks (LLNs). In the Wi-SUN FAN, the data transmissions are performed by multi-hop with physical and data link layer complied with IEEE 802.15.4-2015 and network layer based on Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) and IPv6 Routing Protocol for LLNs (RPL). The transmission performance of the Wi-SUN FAN was evaluated by computer simulation. Following the previous evaluation, in this paper, the experimental performance of multi-hop connectivity is measured and the configuration mechanism of multi-hop network in Wi-SUN FAN modules is comprehensively studied in order to discuss the optimization concept and values for minimizing the configuration time. In addition, the end-to-end transmission delay time and error rate are evaluated to confirm the practicality of the proposed optimization scheme. The experiment result guaranteed that the system of five Wi-SUN FAN modules operating with the optimized scheme achieves more than 99.8% of end-to-end success rate and less than 2 seconds of transmission delay time, with less than 5 minutes of configuration time.
