The increasing demand for larger data capacity drives researchers finding new spectrum beyond 4G, i.e., 28GHz frequency band. The higher carrier frequency brings wider available bandwidth while it also brings more challenges in wireless transceiver design than 4G. One of the biggest challenges is the fractional-N frequency synthesizer/PLL design in this high frequency. The phase noise at 28GHz degrades with the divide ratio N increasing. To encounter this issue, this paper introduces a fractional-N PLL architecture which utilizes both reference and frequency doublers at 40MHz reference input and 14GHz VCO output. The combination of both frequency doublers effectively lowers the divide ratio by 4 times which lower the noise contribution from the feedback divider and charge pump by 12dB. The proposed PLL achieves 0.5ps RMS jitter while consumes only 33mW power. |
