Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) We can demodulate the multi-level polarization-modulation optical signal with Stokes-vector direct detection followed by digital signal processing.
First, in this paper, we describe the principle of operation of the direct-detection-based Stokes-vector receiver. Next, this paper presents detailed analyses of the n-dimensional multi-level modulation scheme, where constellation points are placed on the cubic lattice in the n-dimensional vector space, and the bit-error rate and spectral efficiency of such scheme are discussed in a unified manner. We find that the multi-level polarization-modulation scheme, which has the cubic-lattice constellation in the three-dimensional Stokes space, can approach the Shannon limit of the spectral efficiency similarly to the coherent modulation/demodulation scheme even though direct-detection receivers are employed; this is the great advantage of the polarization-modulation scheme which cannot be attained by the conventional IMDD scheme. In addition, we compare the receiver sensitivity among three optical modulation schemes based on Stokes-vector direct detection, namely, the polarization-modulation scheme, coherent scheme, and dual-polarization IM scheme, and show that the the multi-level polarization-modulation scheme has the best receiver sensitivity.
