Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Unmanned aircrafts, or drones/UAV, are increasingly used in hobby and industries these yeas. Most of the applications are currently in aerial photography, measurement, and agriculture, whereas they are expected to add logistics, infrastructure inspection, and disaster mitigation, which we call an “aerial industrial revolution”. National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) has been involved in R&D and field trials on “aerial radio tower” technology using fixed-wing small unmanned aircrafts for temporary communication establishment in disaster situations, along with the measurement of radio propagation characteristics. The activity has been also extended to high-reliability wireless communication system for remote control and safe operation of multi-rotor drones, which are necessary for wider industrial and disaster applications in future. This paper overviews some of those activities and field trials.
