Study on Frozen Bit Determination Scheme for Polar Codes in Free Space Optical Communications

(in English) In recent years, satellite laser communication is attracting much attention as an important infrastructure, because of its much larger capacity than radio-wave satellite communications. However, in satellite-to-ground laser transmission, scintillation occurs due to air turbulence, and the receive optical power fluctuates, resulting in a burst error. Thus, strong error correction codes are required for high quality transmission. On the other hands, E. Arikan has proposed a new error correction code, Polar code. It is proved that Polar codes asymptotically achieve the channel capacity with a long code length N in any binary memoryless channels. In addition, the calculation complexity of Polar codes in encoding and decoding is in the order of O(NlogN), which is lower than current strong codes. However, to achieve high performance, we need to select “frozen bit” properly. Therefore, in this paper, we investigate the best selection method of frozen bits for free space optics (FSO) by evaluating bit error rate performances in FSO channels.
