Increase and decrease of rapid changes in cross-polarization discrimination (XPD) of Ka-band satellite radio wave caused by thunderstorm events are investigated using the beacon signal (19.45GHz, right-hand circular polarization) of CS-3 and N-Star observed at 1 or 0.1 sec intervals in Osaka Electro-Communication University, Neyagawa, Osaka, from 1990 to 2006. A considerable amount of rapid changes in XPD shows increase of XPD values, meaning decrease of depolarization, although the previous C-band low elevation angle observations conducted by the international satellite communications links primarily showed decrease of XPD values. This tendency is consistently explained examining the increase and decrease of the observed XPD and cross-polar phases, under the assumption of appropriate XPD and cross-polar phases due to the alignment and mean canting angles of ice crystals at the discharging point. Also, the XPD values and cross-polar phases are directly traced during the rapid changes at the discharging point using those measured at 0.1 sec interval. It is found that the XPD values due to the alignment of ice crystals disappear in about 0.5 sec, while the mean canting angles of ice crystals move from nearly vertical around 90°to horizontal around 0°in this short period. |
