An Asymmetric Cell Division Model by Reaction-Diffusion Equations
Shunta Yamashiro, Koji Kurata (Univ. of The Ryukyus) NLP2016-104
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Reaction-diffusion equations or RD systems can mimic various natural patterns. The Gray-Scott model, which is one of two-component RD systems, can produce repeatedly dividing blobs looking like bacteria growing by binary fission. We proposed a model of an asymmetric cell division or differentiation, which is essential to ontogeny. The Gray-Scott model is combined with another two-component RD system via two “messenger” components, resulting in a six-component RD system. It is numerically shown that a “stem cell” divides into two cells, a stem cell and a “differentiated cell” lacking the ability to divide.
