Preparation of Bi-layer Epitaxial Magnetic Films Consisting of L10 Ordered Alloy and Co Thin Films on MgO Substates

(in English) Multilayer films consisting of hard and soft magnetic materials have been studied to investigate the possibilities for anisotropic nanocomposite magnet and high-density perpendicular media. Although rare-earth based magnetic materials are commonly employed as the hard magnetic material, L10-ordered alloys are also considered to be the candidate for the hard magnetic material. In the present study, epitaxial bi-layer films consisting of FePt or FePd and Co layers are prepared on MgO(001) single-crystal substrates to investigate the possibility in forming well controlled hard/soft multilayer magnetic thin films. The FePt layer in Co/FePt bi-layer film formed on MgO(001) is found to be consisting of only L10(001) variant, whereas FePt single-layer is consisting of L10(100), (010) variants in addition to the L10(001) variant. The structure of L10 ordered layer in bi-layer film has been shown to vary delicately depending on the stacking sequence.
