Segmentation of Organ Regions in Medical Images using Hierarchical Active Shape Models

(in English) In this article, the authors report on a hierarchical parametric Active Shape Model (ASM). Different from conventional ASMs, the hierarchical ASM represent a target surface with multiple ASMs, each of which represents a local portion of the surface, and the global shape of the target surface is represented by a combination of the locations and of the shapes of the ASMs. One of the authors has already proposed a hierarchical ASM, in which each of the ASMs represents the local portion non-parametrically. The proposed method, though, represents the local portion by using a parametric subspace as conventional ASMs do. In the hierarchical ASMs, a lower layer consists of multiple models for representing local shapes and a higher layer consists of a single model for representing the global shape. When you register the model to given images, you need to estimate the initial values of the local shape parameters accurately. In the proposed method, these initial values are estimated by registering training images to the given input ones. Experimental results for the performance analysis will be reported.
