Frustration-driven synchronization in candle flame oscillation

(in English) When a few candles are bundled together and ignited, the size of the flames exhibited temporal oscillation due to oxygen deficiency. In the present work, we investigated the flame oscillation of three bundles of candles, which are so arranged in parallel that their flames represent vertexes of an equilateral triangle. The results showed various synchronization modes than two-bundle systems, in the latter of which only in-phase and anti-phase modes had been observed. We also revealed that synchronization in our three-cornered system is rather unstable than those in the two-bundle systems with respect to the initial conditions and external disturbances, partly due to frustration effects caused by three-body interaction.
