Performance evaluation using real data of using heterogeneous RFs in traffic jam alleviation through vehicle-to-vehicle information propagation scheme

(in English) Natural traffic jams are the ones which arise due to the problem of road structure in highways. Specifically, they are known to occur at the sags, in tunnels or curves, etc. Their occurrences are largely affected by the operation psychology of drivers. Although there have been the approaches to detect them with sensors and announce assistive information to car drivers using the roadside units at the places, their benefits depend on the drivers’ degree of recognition on the congestion. We focus on exploiting heterogeneous radio frequencies, such as utilizing 5.8-GHz channels together with 700-MHz channels, for sending information to assist drivers’ controlling their speed to avoid traffic jam. This paper evaluates our proposed scheme by simulation using real trace data of vehicles traveling at sag of a highway obtained during the congestion, with the transportation flow simulator and the network simulator. As a result, we confirmed the effectiveness of the scheme for alleviating traffic jam at the sag and shortening the whole vehicle’s traveling time.
