System Capacity Improvement by Application of Small Cell Antenna Vertical Tilt

(in English) Recently, introduction of small cells with lower transmission power in hotspots within macro cells is being studied as a promising technique to enhance the capacity of data traffic in mobile radio. In this report, effect of beam tilt on the throughput performance is investigated for the case of small cells with relatively small antennas. Results from system-level simulations show that, in terms of user throughput, larger tilt angle settings for small cell antennas benefits users near the small cell base stations, while in terms of sector throughput, larger tilt angle settings are preferred when small cells are located closely to each other.
