On Inaudibility of Cochlear-Delay-based Watermarking Method with Blind Detection

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) This paper reports an investigation on inaudibility of watermarking method based on cochlear delay. The proposed watermarking method employed phase-shift-keying (PSK) technique to embed a watermark into an audio signal. Discontinuity in watermarked signal due to the phase difference between two successive frames makes the sound quality of watermarked signals drastically degraded. We applied a second-order allpass filter to control the phase of the original signal so that the phase difference could become unnoticeable to improve the inaudibility of watermarking method. The experimental results suggested that the sound quality of watermarked signal could be improved by using the second-order allpass filter in the proposed method. We also investigated effect of PSK technique used in cochlear-delay-based watermarking method on sound quality of watermarked signals in different frequency ranges. PSK technique was used to modify the phase of different sub-band signals which are decomposed from the original signal. We evaluated sound quality of watermarked signals in which one sub-band is embedded with a watermark while the other sub-bands are kept unchanged. The experimental results showed that the low frequency region of sound is much affected by PSK technique while the higher frequency region of sound is less affected.
The results suggested that the high frequency region of original signals should be chosen for embedding watermark to reduce sound distortion of watermarked signals caused by the PSK.
