This study investigates the production of ‘causality’ (e.g., causes and consequences) by asking participants to provide their continuations after the prior context in Japanese. Participants tended to 'anchor' their continuation more after consequences than causes. This effect was stronger when consequences were textually closer than when they were not. The result supports the prediction of temporal-textual recency account. Furthermore, it provides evidence of capacity limitations of memory in language and suggests that association to their continuations to earlier context can be more effortful. |
