The present study examined the development of two Japanese-speaking children’s referential strategies using videos of their naturalistic speech at 1;11 and 2;8. Inconsistent with Guerriero et al.’s study, which used a slightly different methodology and did not find language-universal or language-specific patterns in their Japanese data even at 3;0, the results show that (i) the rate at which they overly mention new arguments significantly increases (36%>59% and 38%>60%), and (ii) 77-89% of their new but null arguments involve “shared attention,” regardless of developmental stages. The results indicate a developmental process that goes from non-linguistic to linguistic referential strategies before 3;0. |
