While the medial motor areas are crucially involved in temporal organization of multiple movements in a flexible manner,
it is poorly understood the contribution of the oscillatory local field potentials (LFPs) to the renewal process of multiple motor plans.
Here we investigate modulations of the beta and gamma oscillation in the renewal process of the sequential movements in the supplementary motor area (SMA) and pre-SMA.
We trained two Japanese monkeys to perform a motor task
in which they were required to execute a series of movements based on memory of motor sequence and update memorized sequence by visual instructions.
We found the transient dominance of the gamma power over the beta power while visual instructions were delivered at the first trial for updating a motor plan during delay periods.
This complementary change of oscillatory activity was not simply related to occurrences of any sensory signals or premature execution of movement.
The gamma power attenuated and the beta power gradually enhanced during the delay periods for the same visual instructions after the first trial of updating motor plans.
We then examined if the power of gamma oscillations changed in relation to the instructed arm use (i.e., left or right arm).
We found that the oscillatory power in high-gamma range (80-200 Hz) in visually-guided 1st trial was modulated in relation to the instructed arm use.
