In this paper, performance of two different methods for introducing quiet period (QP) into wireless LAN (WLAN) are evaluated and compared for utilizing TV white space. In the use of temporally and geographically unused frequency spectrum, so-called “white space”, frequency band in operation is necessary to be monitored periodically. A promising approach for monitor the operating channel is placing QP in which all network nodes cease transmission. So we have proposed a method for introducing the QP in the point coordination function (PCF), which is an optional function of the IEEE 802.11 WLAN. In this paper, we propose a method for the QP introducing in the distributed coordination function (DCF), which is a standard function of the IEEE 802.11 WLAN. Throughput, response time, transmitting time, and interval fluctuation of inserting QP are evaluated and compared for both schemes through computer simulation. |
