This study focused on three variables (i.e., social skills as a personality trait, and emotional valence of topics and target person’s facial expressions as situational cues) that might influence on the amount of gaze expressed by participants at a target person as well as emotional state, and we investigated the possibility by using an eye mark recorder. 28 female undergraduates were asked to talk about either (1) what they felt happy recently or (2) what they felt sad recently for 1 minute to a target person appeared on a monitor. The target parson’s facial expression was manipulated such as one changing from neutral (20 sec) to happy (40 sec) and the other changing from neutral (20 sec) to sad (40 sec). The result showed a significant interaction effect between social skills and emotional valence of topics when the target person displayed the neutral face. Participants with high scores on social skills gazed at the target parson’s eyes longer when talking about positive topics than talking about negative topics, while participants with low scores gazed at the target parson’s mouth longer when talking about positive topics than talking about negative topics. The incongruity situations, where the topic valence and the target’s facial expression did not match, induced negative emotional state regardless of one’s social skills, but the degree of negativity was stronger among participants with lower social skills than participants with higher social skills. |
