Recently National Security Agency (NAS) and Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) in the United States are focusing on the R&D of the cyber security, which clearly shows the ensuring cyber security is the urgent issue. Last year, DARPA changed its policy and started the project of the physical cipher, “Quiness”, for protecting eavesdropping the information in the fiber communication link. The goal of the project is rather high, the bit rate of 1 - 10 Gb/s and distance of 1,000 – 10,000 km. The authors have been conducting theoretically and experimentally the R&D of Y-00 quantum cipher, a physical cipher, to meet such performance. So far, the authors evaluated experimentally Y-00 performance of the security levels as well as the communication systems. The random cipher nature was experimentally measured as the security level evaluation. Y-00 transmission experiments were also demonstrated at the data rate over giga-bit per second in long distance optical fiber transmission lines and error-free performance of 2.5-Gb/s Y-00 transceiver over 160-km installed optical fiber over two months was demonstrated. In this report, the authors propose a direct modulation scheme of Y-00 transmitter for downsizing the transceiver and demonstrate 80-km transmission experiment at data rate of 2.5 Gb/s. |
