[Poster Presentation] An Automatic Detection Method for Carotid Artery Calcification in Dental Panoramic Radiographs for Screening of Atherosclerosis -- A New Method Considering Intensity Gradients --

(in English) It has been reported that the carotid artery calcification is closely related to the progress of arteriosclerosis in elderly people. We have investigated an automatic detection system of carotid artery calcifications on dental panoramic radiographs in order to incidentally find arteriosclerosis and refer the patients to medical professionals.
This paper proposes a new detection method based on intensity gradients. It is observed that the intensities of the calcifications in radiographs are higher than those in the surrounding regions. The proposed method utilizes this to realize an automatic detection with smaller number of prefixed parameters than the conventional ones. The detection ability of the proposed method is experimentally shown to be superior to the conventional ones.
