A Detection Method for Carotid Artery Calcification in Dental Panoramic Radiographs

(in English) This paper proposes an automatic detection method for carotid artery calcification in dental panoramic radiographs. The existence of the carotid artery calcification as an index for arteriosclerosis attracts a great deal of attention. The contrast in dental panoramic radiographs is very low. Then ordinary edge detection method detects too many edges in the image. In addition, the brightness of the carotid artery calcification region is similar with that of the bone region. Several detection methods for the carotid artery calcification region have been proposed. However the conventional methods have been required to decide the area for detection of the carotid artery calcification region in advance. It makes automatic detection from the whole image difficult. In the proposed method, estimation and elimination of mandible and spine regions for limitation of the investigation area and application of the conventional method to the obtained region at regular interval make the automatic detection possible. Experimental results show that good detection performance is obtained.
