Advantages of Polling Method Over the Contention Method for Supporting fast Handover in a Microcellular Network
Phan Thanh Hoa, Takahiko Yamada (Ritsumeikan Univ.) RCS2007-202
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Microcellular network is a must for the future mobile network. In order to allow wide band for multimedia communications to many users, the cell scale should be reduced and radio band should be reused in the space domain. However, handover between BSs (base station) cannot be maintained due to unpredictable delay caused by contention access. This paper presents advantages of a polling scheme to eliminate unbounded handover delay caused by contention. Polling for an MT is sent from every BS in the same LMC (Logical Macro Cell) which is a group of several adjacent micro-cells as a virtual single macro cell in multicast groups. Instead of contending the medium of a new cell during handover, MT responses polling emitted in that cell to enable handover. Polling response is multicast to all BSs in the same LMC to enable the next polling cycle. The LMC is switched over together with a motion of the MT when it comes into a new BS to prevent contending for a new LMC. Therefore, smooth handover between BSs is achieved even to fast MT. Our simulation results reveal that the parallel polling and dynamic LMC work well to offer a fast mobile user a very small handover delay compared to the contention method in the microcellular environment without any obstacle. The evaluation is done using the OMNeT++ simulator.
