Outline of a newly developed atmospheric water vapor observation system using LEO satellite beacons and results of evaluation tests of the system at 6.85GHz are described. The system is a radio interferometer with small antennas of 1.4-m diameter. From the analysis of the properties of the phase fluctuations, and their temporal variations and elevation-angle dependency, we have confirmed that phase fluctuations originated from the atmospheric water vapor distributions are detected with the system and the sensitivity of the developed system is about 700 times higher than that of the GPS-based system. Taking account of the results mentioned above, we have designed a nano-size satellite having a microwave emitter fit for the system. Using the satellites, we can construct simpler and low-cost observation system. |
