In Vivo Measurement of Dielectric Properties of Biological Tissue by TDR
Kazunori Koyama, Jianqing Wang, Osamu Fujiwara (NIT)
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) It is essential to measure dielectric properties of human tissue for safety evaluation of electromagnetic field exposure. A conventional frequency-domain measurement technique for dielectric properties is difficult to apply to a specified living tissue, i.e., in-vivo measurement. In this paper, towards developing an in-vivo measurement method for living human tissue, we employed an open-ended coaxial probe together with a time domain reflectometry (TDR) technique, which enables one to extract a reflected waveform for some specified tissue in the time domain. We compared the TDR-measured dielectric properties for human surface tissue with those derived from the conventional frequency-domain technique. As a result, we found a fair agreement between them in the frequency range over 300 MHz. This suggests the possibility of in-vivo dielectric property measurement for superficial human tissue using the proposed TDR technique.
