Recently, multilevel optical modulation schemes attract much attention, because multilevel modulation schemes have narrower spectral bandwidth, larger chromatic dispersion tolerance, and looser requirement for bandwidth of electrical circuits. We have already proposed and demonstrated 8-ary amplitude- and phase- shift keying (APSK) modulation scheme by the combination of binary amplitude- shift keying and differential quaternary phase- shift keying (DQPSK). In this paper, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a novel 16-ary optical modulation / demodulation scheme (16APSK), combining QASK and DQPSK, with 10 Gsymbol/s and 4 bit/symbol. The measured spectral width is 33.8 GHz, and the dispersion tolerance is 50 ps/nm. |
