Construction of an Interactive Region Extraction System using Region-based Contour Trees for Medical 3D Images

(in English) The goal of our research is to extract morphological information from medical 3D images, such as organ shapes. In conventional segmentation methods to extract the information, simple thresholding potentially extracts disconnected noise regions. Although the region-based segmentation methods such as region growing can overcome the problem, holes inside the extracted regions are not avoidable. These problems can be solved by considering the topological relationship among regions. In this paper, we discuss the region extraction procedure with simple processing steps.
Contour Tree is a data structure to describe the topological relationships among isosurfaces. Recently we have proposed a method to construct Contour Trees from digital images, named Region-based Contour Trees. In this report, we propose a system that interactively extracts regions using Region-based Contour Trees, and evaluate this system by applying it to MR microscopy images obtained from specimens of human embryoes.
