During 2008, IEICE Taipei section co-sponsored three events. The first one is the “2008 International Workshop on Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC)”, which was held on Oct. 10th, 2008 at Taipei World Trade Center (TWTC) Nangang Exhibition Hall, Taipei, Taiwan. The workshop is aimed to accelerate the momentum of researching in EMC area and provide a knowledge sharing platform for researchers from Asia-Pacific region as well as other parts of the world. The participants came both from academia and industries in Taiwan. The number of attendees reached 108 with 59% from academia and 41% from industry, which marks a great success in bridging the academia and industry together.
Three international scholars and seven experts from Taiwan are invited to give the speech. The three scholars are Prof. Todd Hubing (Clemson Univ., USA), Prof. Hiroshi Inoue (Akita Univ., Japan), and Dr. Er-Ping Li (IHPC, Singapore). The topics of their talks are “Modeling the Maximum Radiated Emission from Printed Circuit Boards”, “Basic Study on Undesired EM Radiation and Suppression”, and “Modeling of Electrical Package Signal Integrity and Power Integrity”, respectively. Dr. Er-Ping Li’s talk is also the Distinguished Lecture activity on behalf of IEE EMC society. The seven experts in Taiwan rendered topics about “signal integrity issues on PCB” by Dr. Shou-Kuo Hsu (Foxconn Corp.) and Prof. Chi-Wen Kuo, “ESD issues and protection circuit” by Prof. Ming-Dou Ker (NCTU), “EMI issues at power frequencies” by Prof. Chang-Fa Yang (NTUST), “Electromagnetic Bandgap Structure design” by Prof. Ray-Beam Huang (NCTU), and “EMI/RFI issues in wireless communication products” by Prof. Han-Nian Lin (FCU) and Dr. Daniel Lee (Sporten Inc.)  The workshop is kept in highly interactive with many questions and comments among the participants and the speakers. The participants appreciated this one-day workshop dedicated on EMC because it is an inspiring and insightful experience with both technical depth and breadth.

The second event is the “International Symposium on Antenna and Propagation (ISAP)”, which was held during Oct. 27 to Oct. 30, 2008 at Taipei International Conventional Center. This important event is chaired by Prof. Dau-Chyrh Chang in Oriental Institute of Technology.  In this four days event, there are 415 papers presented and 444 attendees from 31 countries participated. Four keynote speeches are invited in this symposium. They are “Overview of Microwaves: Taiwan Perspectives” by Prof. Song-Tsuen Peng, Yuan Ze University, Taiwan, “A Review of Radio Frequency Identification Systems-Present Status, Design Challenges and Future Outlook” by Prof. Raj Mitra, Pennsylvania State University, USA, “Antenna Challenges in Cognitive Radio”, Prof. Peter Hal, School of Engineering, University of Bermingham, UK, and “Recent Antenna Technology for Medical Applications” by Prof. Koichi Ito, Chiba University, Japan. ISAP 2009 is successfully ended in a warm banquet.

The last event is a distinguished lecture entitled as “Sustainable Humanosphere with Space Environments Use”. This lecture is given by President Hiroshi Matsumoto, Kyoto University, on Nov. 17, 2008 at the Department of Electrical Engineering, National Taiwan University (NTU). President Matsumoto was invited by the President Si-Chen Lee, NTU, for celebrating the 80th anniversary of NTU.  A welcome banquet for President Matsumoto and his wife is arranged by Prof. Hung-Chun Chang, EE Department, NTU, in the evening of that day. Several professors from NTUEE, including the Prof. Soo-Chen Pei, Dean of EECS of NTU and Prof. Huei Wang, Head of Graduate Institute of Communication Engineering of NTU, attend this banquet.
