About the IEICE |
|||||
The History of the IEICEThe origin of the IEICE started when "Second Section Technical Group" was established in the former Posts and Telecommunications Ministry Laboratory, Second Section in May 1911. In March 1914, it changed its name to "Telephone and Telegraph Technical Group", and started inviting public members. Since then, the progress and the research and development of the telephone and telegraph have gained momentum both domestically and abroad toward renaming "Technical Group" to "Institute". Thus, in May 1917, for the purpose of research in arts and sciences, information exchange and business promotion, "Telephone and Telegraph Institute" was established. With its establishment, the membership rules were developed, as well as it started issuing in-house magazines, and publishing of its research. Then, with the advance of related studies and technologies and the expansion of its subject fields, it was renamed as "Institute of Telecommunications Engineers" in January 1937, and "Institute of Electronics and Communication Engineers of Japan" in May 1967. Finally, in January 1987, with the rapid advancement of electronics and informatization, it changed its name as "the Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers", whose subject fields are "electronic engineering and information and communication". Also, since 1980 its exploratory committee for basic issues has been in a huge consideration for the making of characteristic and unique projects in each research field in the ability to conduct strenuous activities. And as an intermediate system, the group system was introduced in 1985. In 1995, the society system was introduced as its final form. Presently, there are four Societies (Engineering Sciences, Communications, Electronics, and Information and Systems) and one Group (Human Communication). The IEICE vs. The IEEEA simple application process is all that is required to become an IEICE student member. There are no application fees. Annual membership fees for international students who reside in Japan are 4,500 yen. You will need your professor's seal on your application form also. Note that most professors in electrics and electronics in Japan are members of the IEICE. Student members also receive journals (recommended journals in Engineering Sciences Society group). There is also a student organization. And an international students group will be launched in the near future, so please join the Mailing List for international students.
You may want to get your Japanese friend or professor's help in filling out the application form, as the form may be somewhat complicated. The application form can be found in the membership application page (Japanese). Please see the IEICE student membership page (Japanese) for more information. If you are a student overseas, your membership fee is less. The annual fee is very reasonable, either 1,000 yen or 2,000 yen depending on your country. Please see the IEICE overseas membership page (English) for more information. We recommend you join the Engineering Sciences Society ("A" Society).
