Area: Singapore Representative: Professor Le-Wei(Joshua)Li (National University of Singapore)

First of all, I am pleased to be appointed to continue for another term as one of the IEICE Singapore Representatives. At the same time, I would extend my personal warm welcome to a few new Overseas Area Representatives respectively from Korea and Hong Kong. As one of the representatives, I would strongly support the decision by the IEICE to name the IEICE Section Offices in the Asian areas.

In the activity year 2004-2005, the Singapore Section Office has organized two major seminar series, one is (1) Optical and Photonic Technology on December 22, 2004 and (2) Micro- and Nano-Technology on March 8, 2005. The two seminar series are organized to focus on the new technology developments. Both the first series and the second series represent partially some popular interests in the science and technology.

For the first seminar series on "Optical and Photonic Technology", two distinguished lecture speakers were invited. The first talk by Professor Kiyotoshi Yasumoto (from Dept of Computer Science and Communication Engineering, Kyushu University, Fukuoka 812-8581, Japan) is entitled as "Scattering and Guidance by Photonic Crystals Consisting of Periodic Arrays of Circular Cylinders". The second talk by Professor Le Binh (Dept of Electrical and Computer Systems Engineering, Monash University, Clayton, Victoria, Australia 3168) is entitled as "Advanced Modulation Formats For 40 Gb/s Optical Communications Systems". A good attendance of this seminar series by IEICE members in Singapore is received.

The first one is Professor Tatsuo Itoh (Dept of Electrical Engineering, iniversity of California, Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA 90095-1594, USA) and his talk is entitled as "Active Integrated Antennas". The second speaker is Professor Nader Engheta (University of Pennsylvania, Department of Electrical and Systems Engineering, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania 19104, USA) and his talk is entitled as "Metamaterials, Nano-circuit Elements, and Near-field Devices and Systems". These two topics have attracted many audiences, and a good attendance to this seminar series by IEICE members in Singapore is also received.
